Dorothy Cumming, 97, passed away on May 17, 2018 at St Joseph Nursing Home, Lacon, IL, under OSF Hospice care.
She was born Dorothy Dell Lorentz on February 7, 1921, and, prior to being admitted to the nursing home in 2014, had been a life-long resident of Peoria, IL. She had two brothers, Linn and Eugene. Linn died before Dorothy was born, and Eugene (and his wife, "Fritz") preceded her in death.  She was married in 1939 to Paul Porter Cumming.  He died in 1991.  Surviving are two sons, Alan (Special friend Rita) of Peoria and Gary (Beverly) of Bloomington, one grandson, Bartlett "Bart" (Kim)Cumming, two grandaughters, Charmaine (Paul) Vandersteen and Emily (Mike) Palguta, six great grandchildren, and many special nephews, nieces, and friends. Dorothy will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  She loved children and was "forever" young at heart.  She also loved animals, and at least one dog or cat (or both) were part of her household for most of her life.  She was active in social groups, and she was a founding member of a local chapter (Lambda) of Pi Omicron National(philanthropic) Sorority.  She served in several capacities, including president, for that organization. She was very much interested in art, and in later years became an avid painter in oils.
Prior to her retirement, Dorothy was for many years a secretary and bookkeeper for AA Accounting and Tax Service, a family business that had been founded in 1946 by her husband. That business is currently being operated by her grandson as AA Accounting & Financial Services in Peoria Heights, IL.
Dorothy was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Peoria.
Entombment will be in the American Mausoleum in Peoria.  In lieu of a funeral service, the family expects to offer a memorial service, to be announced at a later date.
The family suggests that any donations be made to St Joseph Nursing Home, 401 9th Street, Lacon, IL 61540 or to First Baptist Church of Peoria, 411 W Lake Avenue, Peoria, IL 61614.
